Pathfinder Foundation participates in the Eighth RIIO International Conference – 2023 August

The eighth session of the Research Institute for the Indian Ocean (RIIO) International Conference, focusing on Challenges and Prospects for Blue Economy Cooperation in the Indian Ocean, was convened in Kunming, China, drawing policymakers and academics from across South and Southeast Asia. Deliberations under themes such as Strategic Competition among Great Powers, Geopolitical Changes and Challenges, Cooperative Mechanisms, and Blue Economy Partnership underscored the need for regional collaboration and strategic vision.

For Sri Lanka, these discussions are pivotal as the nation gears to assume the Chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). Pathfinder Foundation Chairman Bernard Goonetilleke addressed the conference, highlighting the dilemmas small states face amidst great power rivalry emphasizing the need for nuanced approaches in national policymaking.

The event witnessed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) among participating think tanks, fostering a network for cooperation and research. Pathfinder Foundation reaffirmed its commitment by renewing its bilateral MOU with RIIO and expressing intent to establish a network of think tanks. Pathfinder Foundation Executive Director Dr. Dayaratna Silva's participation further underscored the Foundation's dedication to promoting dialogue and collaboration for the sustainable development of the Indian Ocean region.
