The Pathfinder Foundation, in collaboration with the New Zealand High Commission in Colombo, orchestrated a high-level discussion titled "Prospects for Sri Lanka's Dairy Industry: International Case Studies" at the Courtyard by Marriott in Colombo.
Bernard Goonetilleke, Chairman of the Pathfinder Foundation, underscored the forum's significance amid critical policy reforms in Sri Lanka, particularly in agriculture. He highlighted the dairy industry's pivotal role in the nation's economy and rural development and emphasized its contribution to livelihoods and food security.
New Zealand's Minister for Agriculture, O'Connor, emphasized the mutual learning opportunities between New Zealand and Sri Lanka as agricultural producers, stressing the importance of collaboration at various levels. Mel Phillips, Counsellor (Primary Industries) at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi, emphasized the dairy sector's potential to address nutrition deficiencies in Sri Lanka and encouraged proactive governmental decisions.
Dr. Dayaratna Silva, Executive Director of the Pathfinder Foundation, emphasized the need for a tailored approach, suggesting that Sri Lanka draw lessons from diverse models like those of India and New Zealand.
The half-day panel discussion featured esteemed experts from India and New Zealand alongside senior officials from Sri Lanka's agricultural sector. With 60 participants representing key stakeholders, including government bodies, dairy associations, and international organizations, the discussion delved into cooperative strengthening, market-based reforms, productivity enhancement, and sustainable agriculture practices.
This collaborative dialogue aimed to harness international expertise and best practices and propel Sri Lanka's dairy industry towards sustainable growth and development.
